Rory McIlroy suffered yet more disappointment at the BMW PGA Championship, and world number one Scottie Scheffler has shared his thoughts on the Northern Irishman’s efforts at Wentworth.
Billy Horschel’s historic win on the second playoff hole saw McIlroy face yet more disappointment after the four-time major winner placed second at the Irish Open, which took place the week prior at Royal County Down.
McIlroy’s decision-making at Wentworth has been criticised; Scheffler, however, believes the world number three was unfortunate at the famous DP World Tour venue.

Speaking ahead of the Presidents Cup in Montreal, Scheffler was asked to reflect on his memorable season. The world number one, however, was quick to address McIlroy’s recent near miss.
“I think I played a lot of solid tournaments, and it was nice to get some wins. I’ve had years in the past on tour where I’ve played pretty nice, and I haven’t been able to win a bunch,” Scheffler said.
“Sometimes in this game, the breaks go your way, and sometimes they don’t. You know like Rory’s had some close calls. He has a playoff last week, and a guy eagles the final hole to beat him, and that’s kind of a tough deal. He didn’t lose, he got beat. So that can happen.”
Rory McIlroy’s game is now back near its best after DP World Tour swing
It’s hard to argue with Scheffler’s comments. McIlroy wasn’t to blame at Wentworth; Horschel produced a moment of brilliance to clinch the lucrative title.
McIlroy is now consistently competing with the world’s best players, and it will only be a matter of time before he lands major number five.
With Quail Hollow, Royal Portrush and Oakmont set to host the majors along with Augusta National, there’s ample opportunity for McIlroy to place himself firmly in contention to end his ten-year wait for major number five.
Paul McGinley, taking to social media after the BMW, believes McIlroy’s game is in an excellent place. “Rory had an inspired opponent, his game now more rounded than ever as he didn’t play at a level we know he can yet still produced,” McGinley wrote.
