Scottie Scheffler got off to a very solid start at the Charles Schwab Challenge, with a two-under-par round of 68.

Scheffler currently sits five shots adrift of the leader, John Pak, but he’s only two strokes behind second place.

The 28-year-old will undoubtedly fire a round in the mid-60s on Friday, and be bang in contention to win the Charles Schwab Challenge on the weekend.

After his PGA Championship win last week, the Dallas native is flying high right now.

It has been suggested that Scheffler will win more majors than Rory McIlroy by the time he’s done.

And the way he has gone about his business since his Masters win in 2022 proves he has every chance of achieving legendary status in the game.

His mindset really is second to none. Scheffler is at Colonial Country Club to win the Charles Schwab Challenge, and nothing else matters to him right now, concerning golf of course.

Scottie Scheffler gives his verdict on Charles Schwab Challenge course

Scheffler was nowhere near his best at Colonial Country Club on Thursday.

However, there is still every chance he will end the week on the wall of champions.

The three-time major champion was just getting into the groove on day one, and he was probably shaking off a bit of fatigue late on in the day as well.

Scheffler spoke to the press after his opening round, and suggested that the golf course is shaping up nicely.

He said, Yeah, that’s good. The greens were really good, and they’re really firm. The golf course is in great shape. So hopefully the rain holds off, and it will continue to firm up, and it should be a challenging week.

Yeah, I tried to do my best to stay patient today. It was a grind of a day. The winds were pretty gusty, and it was challenging. The greens got firm.

It doesn’t look like we’re going to get much rain this week, so they should continue to firm up, and the golf course should be real nice by the weekend.

The course at Colonial is always incredibly challenging, but if Scheffler manages to find his best stuff, his game is built for the Fort Worth layout.

Scheffler’s major improvement in one department at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Scheffler was off with certain aspects of his game on Thursday at Colonial.

However, one area where he did excel was on the greens.

The 28-year-old holed just over 85 feet of putts – 16 feet above his season average of 16 feet.

He was also ranked T-32 for putts per greens in regulation.

If Scheffler manages to find a way of getting his ball-striking back on point at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and continues to putt even decently well, he will run away with the win this week.

A win for the PGA champion this week would see him become the first player to record three consecutive PGA Tour wins since Dustin Johnson did it back in 2017.
