Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are the two best golfers in the world right now.

Bryson Dechambeau may well have something to say about that, but we can’t judge him fairly due to the fact that he’s only playing 14 three-round events per year, outside of the majors.

PGA Championship winner Scheffler and Masters champion McIlroy reign supreme in world golf right now.

Former PGA champion Mark Brooks recently suggested that Scheffler is a better player than McIlroy, when both have their ‘A’ games.

It’s a tough one to call really. The Dallas native is certainly more consistent, but there’s a real argument to be made that the Northern Irishman’s ‘A+’ game is better than anyone else’s on the planet.

Hopefully we will get to see the two players battle it out head-to-head during the final few months of the season.

No other golfer in the world can lay a glove on Scheffler or McIlroy when they’re on song.

But the question remains – who will have more major titles to their name by the time they’ve retired from playing?

Steve Sands on who will win more majors out of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler

It will be fascinating to watch both players try to add to their major tallies over the next decade or so.

Scheffler’s game is perfectly built to contend in every single major, whilst McIlroy has the talent and ability needed to turn up and win on any given golf course.

Steve Sands was speaking on Claude Harmon’s Son of a Butch podcast, and he responded when asked which player will end up with more majors – Scheffler or McIlroy?

Sands said, I think Rory is going to get to seven, maybe eight. I think Scottie is eight years younger, seven maybe. And I think Scottie will pass him. Brooks is just so great at these big events, I think there might be another one in there for Brooks to get to six. They’re just so hard to win. What did Jack famously tell me one time? ‘You can’t find your game at a major, you have to bring your game to a major’. You get four shots at it a year, you’ve got to be prepped and ready to go. If I had to put my house on one guy, even though he’s two behind Brooks and Rory right now, he’s only 28 years of age, and his life is perfectly in order, if he stays healthy, I think Scottie will surpass Brooks and Rory, and he’ll be the one who could get to double digits.

That’s a bold shout from Sands, but one that makes perfect sense.

The main question mark hanging over McIlroy’s head right now is whether he has the motivation needed to keep winning, whereas that just isn’t an issue for Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler vs Rory McIlroy major records

We could be on the verge of witnessing an era of dominance from both players that we haven’t seen since the days of Tiger Woods.

However, many more majors will need to be won by them, before that comparison can be made.

What do their respective records look like now though?

They both have hugely impressive records but percentage-wise, Scheffler has the edge over McIlroy in every department.

It would be no surprise if both players ended up with double-digit major wins.

However, Scheffler is probably more likely to reach that particular milestone than McIlroy is, due to his incredible consistency and single-mindedness.
