Scottie Scheffler is right in the mix to win the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Links this week, despite an underwhelming second round.

He currently sits in a tie for sixth place, four shots adrift of the leader – Justin Thomas.

Scheffler – a two-time major champion – has experienced a challenging 2025 season so far, after suffering a hand injury at the end of last year.

After a seven-under par round of 64 at the RBC Heritage on day one, Scheffler rejected suggestions that golf is too easy for him.

And he was proven right in that regard on Friday.

Scheffler actually started with two birdies in his first three holes at Harbour Town, but he really struggled to gain any momentum from that point onwards.

He signed for a 70 in the end, and if that ends up being his worst score of the week, he will have every chance of defending his RBC Heritage title.

Scottie Scheffler frustrated by unlucky break during round two at the RBC Heritage

The 28-year-old American definitely hasn’t had his A game this season.

However, the fact that he has made all seven cuts and has four top 10’s to his name with his C game proves just how good he is.

His second round 70 at Harbour Town Links on Friday was symbolic of his season as a whole, in the sense that he simply made too many uncharacteristic mistakes.

However, Scheffler suggested that he was on the wrong end of one hugely unlucky break during his round that probably turned a 68 into the 70 that he eventually shot.

Scheffler was asked to sum up his performance during round two of the RBC Heritage:

I thought the golf course was tougher today. I felt like the fairways I hit it in, the pins were hard to get to, and the fairways that I missed, it was kind of the gettable pins is what I felt like at times out there.

The back nine, I felt like it was hard to get it close to some of those pins. An important hole to hit the fairway, 15, the reachable par-5, I missed the fairway there. Gettable pin on 11, I missed the fairway there. In position on 13, hard pin to get to. 16 in position, can’t really get it to that pin today.

So just little stuff like that where it’s almost like I didn’t time my good shots at the right moment, and I ended up at 1-under. Overall, I feel like my game is in a good spot.

Overall I felt pretty good. Like I said, little things here and there that cost me some shots. Like I said, not hitting the fairways on the right holes. Then some of the holes where I did hit the fairway, I hit middle of fairway on 5, got a mud ball, and it cost me almost two full shots there with the silly three-putt. Just little stuff like that that can turn your day the wrong way. I fought pretty hard today and hung in there well to be four or five back on the weekend.

Golf fans angry with Scottie Scheffler on day two of RBC Heritage

Scheffler has been uncharacteristically hot-headed at times this season.

He seems to be extremely frustrated that his game is not quite where it should be right now.

And that frustration boiled over at Harbour Town on Friday when he slammed his club into the ground in anger after hitting a tree with his second shot on the eighth hole.

Golf fans took to social media to criticise Scheffler for his behaviour, but that was surely a little bit harsh.

It’s not like the American makes a habit of losing his head after hitting bad shots. In fairness, he doesn’t hit many of those, does he!

Scheffler will undoubtedly return to the winner’s circle very soon indeed, and that may well happen at the RBC Heritage this week.
