There have been some fine egg on face moments over the years in golf but Phil Mickelson’s 2025 prediction about Scottie Scheffler might just turn out to be one of the worst takes of all time.
Scheffler won The Open last weekend to make it four wins on the PGA Tour – including two majors – in 2025.
It consolidates his place as world number one and the very best golfer around.
For Phil Mickelson, though, Scheffler’s success has left him with a serious bit of back-tracking being needed.
In a bizarre prediction in March this year, Mickelson boldly predicted we’d not see Scheffler win an event until at least the Ryder Cup came along in September.
Mickelson has recently admitted his Scheffler call was wildly wrong in fairness to him and now, the world number one himself has had the chance to address ‘Lefty’s’ comments.

Scottie Scheffler says what he thought of Phil Mickelson’s prediction about him
Luckily for us, Scottie Scheffler has put himself on the Pardon My Take podcast and answered a bunch of questions around the latest golf musings.
Naturally the conversation got onto the tweet from Mickelson as Scheffler was finally given his chance to respond.
And as expected, it’s mildly amused Scheffler.
“I did see the tweet. It was a great tweet. I think that is what he was trying to say [that I won’t win anything all year] but you can’t say America is going to lose the Ryder Cup when you are an American, because Phil is not dumb, Phil is really smart,” Scheffler commented.
“But, yeah, it did not age very well which I am very pleased with!”

Look, everyone is entitled to an opinion and you have to admire Mickelson a bit for going out on a limb and making such a wild prediction.
Ultimately, though, he has been proven massively wrong.
Scheffler has won four PGA Tour events in the four months since that post by Mickelson, including The Masters and The Open.
| Event | Winning margin (strokes) |
| The CJ Cup Byron Nelson | 8 |
| PGA Championship | 5 |
| The Memorial | 4 |
| The Open | 4 |
On this occasion, it’s one of them that Mickelson has just got massively wrong but don’t bet against him making some more wild calls as time goes on.
One thing you can never level at Mickelson is his lack of belief in something and then the ability to own it if it goes wrong.
