The PGA Championship was won comfortably by Scottie Scheffler in the end, but his five-shot victory doesn’t tell the whole story.
Scheffler is now a three-time major champion after his stunning win at the PGA Championship on Sunday.
The 28-year-old wasn’t really at his scintillating best all week, aside from his final five-hole stretch on day three.
And Scheffler’s father told him just how tough he was to emerge from the struggles of his front nine to go on and win the tournament.
The Dallas native is not only the most consistent ball-striker in professional golf, nor is he just the best with a wedge in his hands, but he’s the strongest mentally as well.

Scheffler was working hard on the range after day two of the PGA Championship with his coach Randy Smith.
His ‘B’ game was good enough to win by five, but can you imagine what the margin of victory would have been, had he been on top form?
Scottie Scheffler calls on the PGA Tour to get stricter after introducing a new rule
Before the PGA Championship began, Rory McIlroy was forced to change drivers, after the longest club in his bag was adjudged to be non-conforming.
And now it has been confirmed that Scheffler faced the same problem.
After lifting the Wanamaker Trophy, the now 15-time PGA Tour winner called for change.
Scheffler was asked if he was forced to change drivers before the start of the PGA Championship.
He said, “Yeah.“
He then responded when asked if his driver switch had anything to do with his struggles on the front-nine on Sunday, “No. I think that was my fault (laughter).
“No. So the driver testing is something that regularly happens on Tour. My driver did fail me this week. We had a feeling that it was going to be coming because I’ve used that driver for over a year. I was kind of fortunate for it to last that long, I felt like.
“I would argue that if we’re going to test the drivers, we need to be even more robust in the way we test them. That was a conversation I had with one of the rules officials; if it’s something we’re going to take seriously, I feel like we’re almost going halfway with it right now.
“If we’re going to test only a third of the field. If we’re going to do it right, leave it up to us as players, like the rest of the rules in the game of golf are.
“It’s a newer rule that we haven’t quite gotten right yet. I think we have some stuff to figure out. I think, if we’re going to do it, we might as well do it right, get more robust and get even more strict. You can test guys every week, if you want. I mean, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t.

“The driver for me is actually really easy. Like I said, we were prepared for it.
“I had used my driver for over a year. With the amount of practice that I do, I felt like I was fortunate for it to last that long.
“The team at TaylorMade, Adrian, did a really good job — actually the week of the Byron, we were really focused on getting it back up for that tournament and this one. Adrian, he did a great job getting me fit for a head.
“Like I said, we were really prepared. So it wasn’t that big of a deal.“
Scheffler is spot on here. If the PGA Tour are to undertake these random checks, then they need to do them correctly.
Really, every player’s driver should be checked before tournaments begin if the tour genuinely want to maintain true integrity in the game.
Scheffler’s win despite pre-PGA Championship prep must be scary for his rivals
The way in which Scheffler won by five shots at Quail Hollow was hugely impressive.
The American was nowhere near his best, and it has now become clear that he also had to compete without his so-called ‘gamer’ driver.
Scheffler’s rivals must have looked at his dominant PGA Championship victory and winced.

And who would bet against him going on to win double-digit majors before his career is done.
