Billy Horschel has returned to the US after enjoying a month-long stay in Europe to compete on the DP World Tour.

It’s been a successful trip for the 37-year-old after he made history at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, becoming the first American to win the flagship event twice.

Horschel also competed at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Open De France.

Horschel has been praised for playing the historic DP World Tour events, and more American golfers should emulate this in the coming years.

Wentworth, St Andrews, Le Golf National and Royal County Down were just some of the fantastic courses used during the autumn swing of the DP World Tour.

Such unique venues aren’t found on the PGA Tour, and it feels as if some of the game’s elite are missing a trick.

For example, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele heading to Europe to compete would provide a massive boost to the DP World Tour.

Furthermore, having the best players competing on iconic courses is precisely what fans want to see.

With the DP World Tour effectively a feeder tour in its current guise, the PGA Tour should look to give back and encourage the likes of Scheffler, Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas to make fleeting appearances during an iconic stretch of the golfing calendar.

Horschel has set an example; it’s now up to others to follow suit.

Smylie Kaufman loves what Billy Horschel has done on the DP World Tour

Horschel’s trip to Europe hasn’t gone unnoticed, with high-profile names impressed by the American’s DP World Tour decision.

“Billy Horschel is one of the few Americans who has made it a priority to go and play on the European Tour and DP World Tour,” said commentator Smylie Kaufman. “I have to give him a lot of credit for doing that, as it’s not easy to do after a very long season.”

“You’ve got such great fans and audience over there in Europe, and watching him there at the Open Championship, you would’ve thought he was from Birmingham. It did feel that way. He’s kind of the adopted European Tour player that’s American.”
