Those worried that the Hero World Challenge may become a procession over the final two rounds would have been almost pleased to see Scottie Scheffler knocked off top spot despite posting a round of 69 on Saturday at Albany.

Scottie Scheffler surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge after a second round of 64 in the Bahamas. Scheffler had already stunned much of the golfing world by debuting a claw grip on the greens.

However, Justin Thomas jumped ahead of the world number one ahead of the final round. Thomas has posted two rounds of 66, while his worst display so far this week was his 67 on Friday.

It would appear that the large majority of the 20 man field are going to have too much work to do to challenge for the title. But there does appear to be a wildcard pushing the likes of Scheffler and Thomas.

Scottie Scheffler labels what Tom Kim did at the Hero World Challenge ‘pretty special’

Tom Kim had a poor start and found himself just one shot ahead of last place after the opening round. However, a 65 on Friday started to turn his event around. And he followed that by shooting 62 in the penultimate round.

Kim made a double bogey on the 17th to end any serious hopes of making a 59. But the South Korean still managed to birdie four of the final five holes to post the lowest score of the week so far – one shot off Rickie Fowler‘s record score at the event since it moved to the Bahamas.

Of course, Scheffler and Kim are good friends. Few will forget Kim’s antics against Scheffler during the Presidents Cup this past season. And speaking after his round, the 28-year-old outlined how impressed he had been by the youngster’s display.

“Yeah, what did he shoot, 10 under? That’s pretty serious golf out there. I feel like I played pretty solid yesterday with no wind and shot eight, so 10 in the wind is a pretty special round,” he said.

Scheffler meanwhile, hinted that he is looking for a little more from his own game heading into the final round.

“I mean, pleased I think would be a stretch, but overall my game’s in a good spot. I’ve liked what I’ve seen the last few days out there on the course and hoping to finish off with a real solid round tomorrow.”

How Kim fared on the PGA Tour in 2024

Kim will have been extremely disappointed with his 2024 season. It is clear that he has the talent to compete with the very best in the world.

However, there were only glimpses of his potential throughout the season. Kim registered just two top 10s on the PGA Tour, while he did not make it beyond the first FedEx Cup play-off event after a late collapse in Memphis.

He lost out to Scheffler in a play-off at the Travelers Championship. Meanwhile, Kim came in for criticism after breaking his locker after losing a play-off to Byeong Hun An in the Genesis Championship in South Korea.

Kim has the talent to be someone who wins at least once every year on the PGA Tour – as his 62 proved. It would be a big statement if he could now overtake Scheffler and Thomas on Sunday at Albany.
