It’s not unfair to say that Rory McIlroy hasn’t quite had the season he’d have liked in 2024.

After starting like a house on fire by finishing first and second in two big DP World Tour events, McIlroy has struggled to take that form into the PGA Tour and majors.

McIlroy did look to have turned a corner at the back end of April as he won with Shane Lowry at The Zurich, before winning on his own at the Wells Fargo a week later.

Still, despite some promising showings, McIlroy’s year will be remembered for his meltdown in the US Open, while he once again got nowhere near winning The Masters and failed to make the cut at The Open.

However, McIlroy remains in confident mood and in fairness, he does have three top fives in his last five PGA tournaments.

Indeed, McIlroy has told the media just when he felt his game clicked this year.

Rory McIlroy shares when he knew his game was coming together this year

Speaking to the media ahead of teeing off at the St Jude Championship this week, McIlroy admitted that it all came from a driving range session back in New Orleans.

“I definitely feel like I found a couple of things in New Orleans actually,” McIlroy commented.

“I specifically remember being on the range in New Orleans and getting a couple of feelings in my swing. Those are the feelings that I have carried with me for the last three months.”

Rory McIlroy will be desperate to win to finish the year

It’s going to take something miraculous for anyone to catch Scottie Scheffler at the top of the FedEx standings.

But Rory McIlroy is a winner and he’ll want to ensure he finishes the season in top form.

McIlroy has already suggested that if he keeps it in play at the St Jude, then birdies could flow. And that’s exactly how he’ll be looking at this tournament.

However, McIlroy must also do a few things differently. McIlroy has admitted he keeps looking at the scoreboards a bit too much, and that’s just one element of his mental game he can improve on.

Regardless, he can still do the business this week and if he turns up and produces, he’s as good a shout as anyone in terms of reeling Scheffler in a touch.
