The PGA Tour playoffs are now firmly within view as the world’s elite golfers attempt to hunt down Scottie Scheffler in the race for the FedEx Cup.

This weekend’s Wyndham Championship is the last regular PGA Tour event before the end-of-season finale begins. Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth is the highest-profile player battling to make it into the FedEx Cup top 70 at Sedgefield Country Club.

First up is the St. Jude Championship before the BMW Championship takes place the week prior to the season finale at East Lake in Atlanta.

Rory McIlroy currently sits third in the FedEx Cup standings and will be looking to get his stuttering season back on track over the next couple of weeks.

And the PGA Tour could’ve helped the Northern Irishman after making history at the second playoff event at Castle Pines Golf Club.

Castle Pines will host the BMW Championship starting the week before the Tour Championship.

The 2023 edition saw a stacked leaderboard emerge at Olympia Fields. Viktor Hovland took the title with Scheffler, McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Max Homa, who were all in close pursuit.

Now, PGA history is set to be made at the BMW, with Castle Pines set to be the longest course ever seen on tour, coming in at a staggering 8130 yards, something which could suit McIlroy’s booming drives, which he can launch well over 320 yards.

Some notable holes include a 662-yard opening par-five, a 254-yard par-three and a 545-yard par-four. Clearly, those who can hit the ball a long way will benefit.

Rory McIlroy to excel back in traditional PGA Tour conditions

Given the length of the course and the typical low scoring at the BMW, it’s hard to envisage the rough being overly penal, which could suit the ‘bomb and gouge’ tactics often seen on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy didn’t look entirely comfortable during the links stretch of the season and will perhaps be eager to return to traditional PGA Tour conditions.

The four-time major champion will be desperate to end his season on a high. The Northern Irishman’s form has been the centre of much debate in recent times. Rex Hoggard even suggested McIlroy would welcome an extended break after enduring an up-and-down 2024.

Given his previous form at East Lake, McIlroy ending his campaign in positive fashion isn’t out of the question.
