Rory McIlroy is still without a major win since 2014 and he’s now come out with what could be deemed as a new excuse as to why he’s not won.
McIlroy’s fifth major and quest for a green jacket at Augusta is often one of the most widely discussed talking points every year.
However, while it’s talked about plenty, it’s never quite happened for McIlroy.
This year, he came agonisingly close at the US Open, while his efforts in the other three majors didn’t ever give him a solid chance of success.

Of course, McIlroy has won plenty over the years and knows how to get the job done deep down.
But speaking about why he might not win as much these days, the Northern Irishman has suggested it’s down to risk.

Rory McIlroy’s fresh excuse for not winning
Speaking in an interview with Kyle Porter for Normal Sport (quotes via the Express), McIlroy was discussing how he navigates risk now he’s a bit older.
And discussing risk in his golf game, the 35-year-old admitted it might have cost him a few more wins by not being quite as aggressive.
“I’m not as much as a risk taker in my profession, like in golf, as I used to be,” McIlroy quipped.
“I think in some way, that’s helped me because I’ve become a lot more consistent player. But maybe in other ways, it’s held me back over the last couple of years.
“Like the way my final days have gone, I’ll go out and shoot 70 or 69 and play a pretty solid round of golf, but it’s not enough to win.”
McIlroy has to beat mental demons in majors
The US Open this year felt like a massive kick in the teeth for Rory. Since then, he’s played some good gold but there is definitely an extra shadow over him when it comes to the majors.
Ultimately, he has to get over it himself and keep playing good golf and then when it comes down to it, have the mentality to get over the line again.
Nick Faldo has criticised McIlroy’s iron play at times, while Bryson DeChambeau has tipped McIlroy to go on and win more majors with ease.
Still, quite whether McIlroy will get over the line, is the big question.
2025, then, could be massive for Rory.
