Sir Nick Faldo says there’s something ‘dreadful’ about Rory McIlroy’s game that’s killing him in majors

Rory McIlroy might be in contention to win the US Open this weekend but Sir Nick Faldo has been on his case once again.

McIlroy produced a fine display in round three to keep himself in the mix to win at Pinehurst.

Bryson DeChambeau is the man to catch, with the American producing his own stunning round to take shots in hand into the final round at Pinehurst No.2.

For McIlroy, being in contention on the final day is all that matters and his decade long wait for a major win could come to an end if it all comes together.

However, for it to come together, McIlroy needs all of his game dialled in.

And commenting on McIlroy’s inability to win a major since 2014, Sir Nick Faldo has had his say.

Speaking about McIlroy’s overall game on Sky Sports commentary, Faldo admitted he finds the Northern Irishman’s short-iron play poor at times.

“Well really as we’ve seen for six seven years now, he drives unbelievably well, best probably in the world but then the short irons, 9 iron in, are dreadful at times,” Faldo said.

“Demoralising at times. Rather than being critical. Just to him. That’s the word I’ve use for years, just so demoralising. Stripes it 350 yards down the fairway and you walk off with a five with a wedge in your hand.

“It’s a killer to pro golf that is.”

McIlroy will know his faults

McIlroy is one of the best golfers in the world and he will know what he needs to do. Like anything, it’s just a case of executing and bringing it all together.

Faldo obviously wants McIlroy to do well and praises the 34-year-old a lot as well.

However, he had his say on McIlroy’s iron play yesterday as well and it’s obviously something that’s bothering him.

As Faldo says, it is costing Rory at times and for a player so talented, it must be frustrating for him as well as Faldo.

Hopefully, in round four, everything comes together and we can see a brilliant shootout between McIlroy and DeChambeau.
