Rory McIlroy finally won The Masters on Sunday – a feat that Angel Cabrera accomplished way back in 2009.
Angel Cabrera had another chance to win The Masters in 2011, and ironically, he was paired with Rory McIlroy in the final round at Augusta National, when the Northern Irishman shot a heartbreaking 80.
Charl Schwartzel ended up with the green jacket that year, as he capitalised on Rory’s final round capitulation.
McIlroy finally laid those demons to rest in 2025, with a thrilling victory at The Masters – one that saw him join the exclusive Grand Slam club.
The likes of Phil Mickelson swarmed to their social media platforms to congratulate Rory McIlroy on winning The Masters.

Winning The Masters is the pinnacle professional golfers’ careers, perhaps alongside lifting the Claret Jug.
Cabrera knows what it feels like to do it, and now Rory does too. The Argentinian was clearly desperate to see the 35-year-old superstar finally win a green jacket on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy reveals what Angel Cabrera wrote on a note for him in before final round of The Masters
Cabrera has experienced terrible problems over the past few years.
The 2009 Masters champion spent 30 months in jail, and was only released in August 2023.
However, all of that is behind him now, and he even won a Champions Tour event last week!
McIlroy spoke to the press after his fine victory today, and lifted the lid on something extremely nice Cabrera did for him before he teed off on Sunday:
“I don’t know if any Masters champion has had four doubles during the week, but maybe I am the first. Just a complete rollercoaster of emotions today and what came out of me on the last green in the play off was at least 11 years, if not 14 years of pent up emotion.

“It was so ironic that I got to my locker this morning and opened it up and there was a note in there from Angel Cabrera. Just wishing me luck. Angel Cabrera was the player I played with on the final day in 2011. It was a nice touch and a little bit ironic at the same time. It has been 14 long years but thankfully I got the job done.“
A classy move indeed from Cabrera.
Who Augusta patrons wanted to win The Masters – Rory McIlroy or Bryson DeChambeau
McIlroy and DeChambeau went head-to-head on Masters Sunday at Augusta.
At the U.S Open, DeChambeau had the raucous North Carolina crowd firmly behind him at Pinehurst.
However, that wasn’t the case at Augusta.
Rory McIlroy had the patrons in his corner on Masters Sunday, and they helped get him over the line in the end.
They weren’t the only ones who were desperate for Rory to win. Perhaps Angel Cabrera was one of the most surprising fans the Northern Irishman had in his corner though.
