Rory McIlroy didn’t make it easy on himself at Augusta National on Sunday, but he ended the day as a Masters champion.

The 89th edition of The Masters went down in history as one of the greatest golf tournaments ever witnessed, if not the greatest.

Rory McIlroy was the last man standing at Augusta National on Sunday, as he became the sixth member of the incredibly exclusive Grand Slam club.

The 35-year-old PGA Tour star received thousands of messages of congratulations after his monumental victory. Even LIV Golf’s official Instagram account congratulated Rory McIlroy after his Masters win!

McIlroy will be feeling on top of the world right now.

However, his win at The Masters was made even sweeter after what one LIV Golf player said about him last year.

Rory McIlroy proved LIV Golf’s Talor Gooch wrong after dramatic Masters win

Gooch was very upset that he didn’t qualify to play in the 2024 Masters.

He missed out on this year’s edition as well.

Last year, LIV Golf star Gooch suggested that, should McIlroy win the Masters, it should come with an asterisk above his name, as quoted by The Express:

If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his (career) grand slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk,” Gooch told Australian Golf Digest last year. “It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.

What a ridiculous thing to say from Taylor Gooch. I’m sure McIlroy would have really struggled had the likes of Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter played at Augusta this year!

How LIV golfers fared at The Masters

There were a couple of very bright showings indeed from the LIV Golf players.

Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau secured top-five finishes, but most of the others underwhelmed to say the least.

LIV Golf undoubtedly have some good players on their tour, but for Gooch to suggest that The Masters would be easier to win without some of them there is utterly farcical.

Those 12 players above are the most talented that LIV Golf has to offer, and that was the best they could muster.

Whatever those on the LIV side of the tracks want you to believe, nothing can be taken away from Rory McIlroy after his outstanding success at The Masters.

And the likes of Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka must be looking at Rory right now with a real tinge of jealousy.
