Rory McIlroy dominated at Quail Hollow yesterday to win out once more ahead of the PGA Championship this week.

McIlroy’s brilliant final round of 65 to reel in Xander Schauffele and then blow him away by five shots in the end, even finding time to mess up the final hole.

For McIlroy, it was the perfect preparation for the upcoming PGA Championship and secured him a fourth Wells Fargo Championship in doing so.

Over the course of the four days, a lot was made of McIlroy’s driving off the tee. Indeed, he comfortably out-drove Schauffele on a number of occasions to wow the crowd and onlookers.

However, speaking about his best shots of the weekend, McIlroy has revealed that it was actually two iron shots that really got his juices flowing.

Rory McIlroy shares the two best shots he hit in his final round at Quail Hollow

Speaking in his interview after securing his fourth Wells Fargo title, McIlroy opened up on the two shots he felt were huge for him in round four.

“I’d say the two best shots I hit today where the three quarter eight iron into nine and the nine iron into 13. They were just really good iron shots when I needed to hit them,” McIlroy said.

“That gives me more satisfaction and more confidence than any of the drives I hit out there.”

McIlroy’s iron play could help him win at Valhalla

Everyone in golf knows how good Rory McIlroy is off the tee with the driver. He consistently hits it over 340 yards on a good day and it’s quite mesmerising to watch.

However, if McIlroy is finding things coming together with his irons and wedges, then the rest of the field is in trouble going into Valhalla.

Ball striking and tee-to-green play has what’s made Scottie Scheffler such a force this year on tour.

If McIlroy can now start matching Scheffler with that and keep consistent and accurate off the tee, then we could be in for some explosive golf in the coming months.
