Rory McIlroy has been speaking after his second round of three-under put him tied for second at The Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy produced another under-par round like in round one but this time went bogey free as he showed some good signs of his game coming together.

The Northern Irishman is four off the leader, Xander Schauffele, and shares the second spot with Jason Day on seven under.

Of course, things might have been better for McIlroy if a few more putts has rolled in, while some erratic tee shots with the driver also didn’t help his cause.

However, speaking about his driving, McIlroy has explained why the course at Quail Hollow makes it tough for his game and overall, he isn’t too fussed if he misses fairways.

Rory McIlroy explains his driver issues around Quail Hollow

Speaking in his flash interview after his second round, McIlroy was bullish about his driving standards.

“I think I probably only hit the same amount of fairways as I did on day one but strokes gained off the tee was pretty high. It’s hard, you know the fairways here are kind of angled and there’s a lot of dog legs. You know with the distance I hit it, it’s hard to fit it into some of the places I try and hit it into,” McIlroy said.

“But I don’t mind if I miss a few fairways as long as I miss them in the right spots and I have an angle into the greens. I just got to keep being aggressive and I hit a good tee-shot on the last one there on nine so a few good swings coming in.”

McIlroy is looking to find form ahead of the PGA Championship next week.

Going into the event, there is a good chance that world number one Scottie Scheffler misses the tournament, with his wife due to give birth.

McIlroy, then, will hope to seize the day if Scheffler is missing and on this form, looks a good shout to be in the mix to take home his fifth major.
