Golf fans are split after rules official explains Xander Schauffele drop at the Wells Fargo Championship

Xander Schauffele might be winning at Quail Hollow after two rounds but he isn’t going to escape the controversy of day one anytime soon.

Schauffele is eleven under par after two rounds at The Wells Fargo and has Jason Day and Rory McIlroy as the two closest to him on seven under.

The American is looking to get himself into form ahead of the PGA Championship next week and he’s doing a stellar job of that so far.

Schauffele hasn’t won on tour since the summer of 2022 and a win here at Quail Hollow would go a long way to healing the scars of a poor few years.

However, while Schauffele might well walk away the winner, the controversy of him getting relief on the eighth hole – his 17th – in round one, will linger.

Golf fans had already reacted furiously to the ruling overnight on social media.

And after an explanation was posted by the PGA Tour’s official social account today with the rules official who gave the relief explaining the decision, fans of the game are still not 100% convinced.

While the explanation from the official was good and the man alongside him showed how to get the shot out of the bushes regardless, golf fans were still split on the footage.

Naturally, some enjoyed the clip, with some feeling it offered a good explanation of proceedings.

@scottisadrummer also seemed to agree with the above stance, commenting ‘I love this’ in response.

However, there were some who were halfway on the matter as well, feeling the explanation was valid but only justified the initial outrage.

@mykie824 commented in that manner, adding:

“LOL. Hits the shot with ease, shot link tower doesn’t come into play whatsoever. Love Johnson for doing this, but completely validates the outrage“

While another user on X also shared the same opinion.

Another X user, @red133883 also shared similar thoughts, suggesting Schauffele got away with one.

“Thank you for the explanation but him hitting the shot proves the tower was not in his way“

It seems, then, that the world of golf is still a touch annoyed about the whole fiasco.

In the end, it will matter little to Schauffele. He did stay within the rules in essence but it will leave a sour taste and just like Patrick Reed many years back, these things tend to stick.
