Rory McIlroy finds one word to describe Scottie Scheffler as a golfer ahead of the US Open

Rory McIlroy has described world number one Scottie Scheffler in one word ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2.

Scheffler has been in relentless form since the turn of the year, claiming five victories, with his most recent win coming in last week’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

The American is once again the overwhelming favourite ahead of the year’s third major championship – and McIlroy has now shared his view on Scheffler’s current performance level.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, McIlroy was asked to assess Scheffler’s recent performances. The Northern Irishman said: “The fact that the only thing that took him from winning a golf tournament was going into a jail cell for an hour! I think just the relentlessness.”

McIlroy went on to praise the world number one’s ability to overcome challenges both on and off the course.

“A lot of stuff has gone on in his life as well,” he added. “They have just had a new child; he has been through some struggles in his game, particularly the putter, which he has been able to turn around.

“It’s not as if he hasn’t had challenges along the way. But the word I describe it as it relentless. It seems like every time he shows up, he seems to be the guy to beat, and deservedly so.”

McIlroy was also in no doubt about Scheffler’s standing as the world’s best player.

“I think he has played 13 times this year and only once out of the top 10. It seems like he is always in contention,” he explained. “The most exciting thing about last week at Memorial was when he made the triple, and it was like he might let people in here, but he finds a way to steady the ship and make a few birdies and he’s undoubtedly the best player in the world at the minute by a long way. It’s up to us to try and get to his level.”

As McIlroy mentioned, Scheffler’s putting has been massively improved this season and a big part in his recent successes.

The world number one is now able to take full advantage of his near-perfect tee-to-green play more frequently.

This week’s test at Pinehurst will be a stern examination of just how much Scheffler has improved on the greens.

Slopes, grain and lighting fast surfaces will require microscopic attention to detail – and those who are skilled with the flat stick could undoubtedly benefit.
