A history of Pinehurst Resort
1895 – Early 1900s
Pinehurst Resort was founded in 1895 by James Walker Tufts. Tufts envisioned creating a health retreat in the Sandhills region and purchased 5,800 acres of land to bring this vision to life.
The village of Pinehurst was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for designing Central Park in New York City. In 1898, Pinehurst introduced its first rudimentary nine-hole golf course. The beginning of something massive.
1900s – 1940s
In 1900, Tufts hired Donald Ross to oversee the development of Pinehurst’s golf courses. Ross would go on to design numerous courses at Pinehurst, including the most iconic, Pinehurst No. 2. By the 1920s, Pinehurst had expanded to include several golf courses, tennis courts, and various recreational facilities.
1950s – 1980s
Pinehurst Resort quickly gained a reputation for hosting major golf tournaments, including the North and South Open and the PGA Championship. Despite undergoing several ownership changes during this period, the resort maintained its extremely high standards.
1990s – Present
The modern era of Pinehurst Resort has undergone many changes. For example, in 2010, Pinehurst No. 2 underwent a comprehensive restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, aiming to return the course to Donald Ross’s original vision. It continues to host major events, including the 2024 US Open.
