Rory McIlroy admits he ‘struggled’ with part of his game at the Truist Championship which could be a big issue for his PGA Championship hopes

Rory McIlroy’s focus is now firmly on the PGA Championship after he came up short at the Truist Championship in Philadelphia.

McIlroy played fairly well all week and improved as the week went on to finish in a tie for seventh and 10-under par.

However, McIlroy didn’t quite have his best and despite the wide open fairways of Philadelphia Cricket Club offering him chances, he never quite capitalised fully.

Of course, going into the PGA Championship next week at Quail Hollow, there could be similar opportunities for McIlroy.

But discussing his week with the media after his final round, McIlroy has suggested he’s got an issue which could hamper him at Quail Hollow.

Rory McIlroy suggests he has a problem to fix ahead of the PGA Championship

Speaking to the media after his final round saw him finish in T7, McIlroy quickly looked ahead to the PGA Championship.

However, he suggested that there’s a bit of a worry in his game that could translate to Quail Hollow.

“I sort of struggled with this in Houston as well, whenever we get these big, wide, open golf courses where there’s not a ton of definition. I think I would have hit more fairways if it had been tree lined,” McIlroy admitted.

“I felt like I drove it a little better on the back nine today, which was good. Hard thing this week as well is the wind on the range has been left-to-right all week, and then you get out there, and the first hole you play right-to-left, 4, it’s like just trying to adjust again.

“Overall I felt like I got a little better as the week went on. Played good. As you said, like bogey-free. I wish I’d made a few more birdies. I’ve got a better gauge of where my game is standing here right now than I did at the start of the week. It was a good week for that.

“I wish I had got myself into contention a little bit more, but it was a good week, especially looking ahead to next week.”

Rory McIlroy’s Quail Hollow record will see him right at the PGA

There’s something about Quail Hollow and Rory McIlroy that just clicks. Yes, if he’s struggling a bit with what he says here, then it could hinder him.

However, in the main, he should be more than fine in North Carolina.

McIlroy has won four times at Quail Hollow, including a win in 2024 as well as his dominant performance in 2015 where he set the course record.

Whatever McIlroy’s issues in his game are right now, they aren’t causing too many problems really and if he can get that right for next week, we might be looking at a sixth major for McIlroy.
