Robert MacIntyre heads into the final round of the BMW Championship with a four-shot lead over world number one Scottie Scheffler.

MacIntyre has been in sensational form at Caves Valley this week, shooting 62, 64 and 68 during the first three rounds of the BMW Championship.

While Scheffler is looming large in his rearview mirror, the Scot will be extremely confident in his ability to get the job done in Baltimore on Sunday.

MacIntyre began the BMW Championship on fire with a round of eight-under par and he has kept his nose in front of the pack ever since.

Scheffler is a huge fan of MacIntyre’s game, and it’s little wonder as to why.

However, some of the American fans gave the 29-year-old from Scotland a really tough time at Caves Valley on Saturday.

MacIntyre put his finger to his lips and ‘shushed’ the crowd after holing a seven-foot putt for par on the 14th hole, following some shouts from the gallery behind the green.

And unsurprisingly, he was asked about what actually happened when he addressed the media after his third round.

McIntyre explained: Yeah, I totally expected it. I totally expected to be in this situation today when I’m in this position. It’s going to be the exact same tomorrow.

Yeah, I’ll give as good back as I get. Look, I thought I played great. There was obviously a couple of shouts. But no, there’s plenty of security there that are hearing it and seeing it, and yeah, I did see them talk to a few people. I don’t know if anyone was thrown out, but there was plenty of people to talk to.

Yeah, he was just jeering. He was just shouting I missed it, he’s pushed it. Pushed it right in the middle of the hole, I guess.

The Scot was then asked whether being heckled by fans fires him up even more.

MacIntyre said: 100 percent. It can go two ways. But look, I grew up all my days amateur golf being the one on the outside looking in, face not fitting, really fighting for it. What we say in the team, it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog, and I grew up fighting to be in this position.

Fair play to MacIntyre. He is certainly no shrinking violet, and if fans are going to heckle the Scot, they had better expect him to give it to them back.

Scottie Scheffler reacts to Robert MacIntyre being heckled at the BMW Championship

Scheffler has an extremely interesting take on MacIntyre’s interaction with the crowd on the 14th hole on Saturday.

The world number one was asked to give his verdict on the heckling incident.

He said: I didn’t see any of that. I played with Bob when we were in Scotland. I heard some fairly choice words when I was leading the tournament in Ireland.

I think it’s part of it. People have a tendency to say things that are dumb. I can think of a few things that were said to me in the final round in Ireland that were very far over the line. If you’re a fan, it’s only going to fire the guy up more, and I think just do your best to behave out there. It can be a little bit silly sometimes.

Again, that’s a very good point from Scheffler. Golf fans will always have their home favourites, and it works both ways.

Today at the BMW Championship was MacIntyre’s turn to suffer.
