Robert MacIntyre, take a bow. What a sensational round of golf that was from the Scot on day one of the BMW Championship.

MacIntyre blitzed the field on Thursday at Caves Valley, firing a stunning eight-under par 62 – one that saw him take a three-shot lead into day two of the BMW Championship.

Interestingly, the 29-year-old’s round got off to a fairly slow start. He was even par through three holes and then just two-under standing on the 13th tee.

That’s when the man from Scotland caught fire, though.

It was only last month when MacIntyre called for the PGA Tour to change their ‘hectic’ schedule, as he admitted to feeling burned out.

However, he showed no sign of fatigue on day one in Baltimore on Thursday.

Incredibly, the Scot birdied his final six holes of the day to shoot 62.

He holed just under 195 feet of putts during his first round after rolling in tramliners on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

MacIntyre spoke to the media after his round and opened up on what he did during the rain delay at Caves Valley.

He said: Yeah, I’d never been great on restarts after a rain delay. That kind of changed — I changed it up at the U.S. Open this year when we went in for the rain delay on Sunday. I kept myself moving. I kept myself warm. I wasn’t allowing the air-conditioning to almost freeze you and then you come back out to the heat and it’s a shock. It was all about trying to stay warm, and the locker room was a nice temperature, so it wasn’t like I was having to keep moving, keep stretching.

I just changed outfit because of the conditions, but no, it came at a tough time, but it gave the course a little more to us.

His new approach to rain delays clearly worked!

MacIntyre was then asked to give an assessment of his opening round of 62.

The 29-year-old said: Yeah, probably the last six holes is probably as good as I’ve ever putted in a stretch of holes. Just so consistent.

But since I changed coach at Pebble Beach this year on the putting, I’ve turned the right corner. I’ve got back to doing what I’m used to doing. You don’t expect to hole the big long putts. I don’t even know how long that one was on the par-3, but it was a long way away. But I expect to roll in putts. I work hard at it. I do a lot on my reads. I do a lot on my touch.

When you get the eye on, it’s free flowing, and it’s nice.

Robert MacIntyre’s stats on day one of the BMW Championship

MacIntyre was flawless on the greens at Caves Valley on Thursday, but his all-round game was in great shape as well.

Here are his numbers from day one of the BMW Championship:

StatsMacIntyre’s day one rank
Strokes gained off the tee38th
Strokes gained approach2nd
Strokes gained around the green21st
Strokes gained putting1st
Strokes gained total1st

Those stats are hugely impressive, and if he continues to putt the way he did on day one throughout the rest of the week, he could well run away from this.

However, MacIntyre will be well aware of Tommy Fleetwood and a certain Scottie Scheffler looming large in his rearview mirror ahead of the second round of the BMW Championship.
