Rory McIlroy has helped start the 2025 major championship season in stunning fashion, having won The Masters in an unforgettable manner.

Tiger Woods predicted McIlroy to win the career grand slam, a feat he finally achieved at The Masters at Augusta National.

McIlroy has now joined Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus in securing the record.

Northern Irishman McIlroy is now thinking of a multi-major win season, with the PGA Championship up next in the schedule.

It takes place at Quail Hollow next month, followed by the US Open and The Open Championship in June and July respectively.

Rick Shiels wants big name major success after Rory McIlroy wins The Masters

And YouTuber Rick Shiels is now expecting big things at those tournaments based on what McIlroy did at Augusta.

He said on The Rick Shiels Golf Show: “I honestly think it might be one of the most influential Masters that has ever happened in the world of golf.

“It has been everywhere. Even in the UK, every single letter that has been sent in the last few days has literally had a stamp from the Royal Family congratulating Rory McIlroy on winning the grand slam.

“He is going to be knighted because of that. He is going to become Sir Rory McIlroy. I feel like it has been on every media outlet, from mainstream to popular culture.

“I really think it’s put a huge spotlight on the world of golf which is only a good thing and I can’t wait for the next major. I am champing at the bit.

“Justin Thomas won at Harbour Town on the PGA Tour last week, first win in three years. There has been a little bit of media around that.

“It just shows when a huge name wins a major, like Tiger Woods in 2019 or Rory McIlroy in 2025. Tiger back in 1997.

“It sends ripples through the world. Not just the world of golf or sport, but quite literally the world. I would probably say Bryson [DeChambeau] winning the US Open did a bit of that.

“But I think it is going to be a crazy year for golf, certainly with majors. You have four huge named winners – and anybody who wins a major deserves to win a major.

“But just looking at it selfishly from the world of golf, if you can get those big names winning this year it could be a huge year for golf in 2025.”

Can high-profile stars repeat 2024 major championship heroics in 2025?

Big names certainly emerged victorious in 2024, with LIV Golf star DeChambeau having edged out McIlroy at the US Open.

World number one Scottie Scheffler meanwhile won The Masters, with his fellow PGA Tour star Xander Schauffele winning the PGA Championship and The Open.

The American pair haven’t exactly set the world alight in 2025 so far, although both Scheffler and Schauffele have had their seasons disrupted by injury.

McIlroy meanwhile has been the dominant force, with the five-time major champion already on three wins for the season.
