Bernhard Langer won his 47th PGA Tour Champions event at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix, meaning the German has now tasted victory 18 years in a row on the senior circuit.

The 67-year-old, who won two Masters titles, is one of the few players who will probably be best remembered for his form after turning 50. Langer’s historic Charles Schwab Cup Championship win has seen him pull clear of Hale Irwin, and the German’s legacy as a Champion’s Tour great has now been cemented.

Langer, who helped guide Europe to Ryder Cup glory in 2004, is clearly still operating at an extremely high level on the PGA Tour Champions. Despite not hitting the ball as far as he used to, the German finished 18 under in Phoenix, which is well beyond the reach of most.

Rick Shiels, who recently filmed a video with Langer, has since discussed the German’s form and whether he’d be able to compete on the senior circuit.

Speaking on the latest Rick Shiels Golf Show Podcast, the Englishman was asked whether his game would be good enough to compete with the game’s elite senior players.

“No. I can’t shoot -18,” Shiels said. “Last place over four rounds of golf, shot eight over. I don’t believe.

“I would be happy if I walked off a week’s tournament being eight over. I would go, I’d take that, appreciate that. I could not!”

PGA Tour vs PGA Tour Champions length

Most people would assume that PGA Tour Champions courses are significantly shorter; however, that isn’t the case.

Senior circuit courses are at least 7000 yards long and can be as long as 7500 yards. The average length of a PGA Tour course in 2024 was 7344 yards, with 18 being shorter than average.

One significant difference involves the format, however. PGA Tour Champions players are only required to complete 54 holes instead of the 72-hole norm. Furthermore, buggies are allowed for those with special approval.

Given the length of the courses and the overall standard of the senior circuit, it’s no surprise that Shiels believes his game is well below the level.

Shiels recently won $45,000 on the Bryan Bros YouTube channel after holing a number of clutch putts during a high-stakes Skins game at Solina Golf Club in South Carolina.
