YouTube golf star Rick Shiels spends much of his time travelling around the UK and Ireland, playing some of the best courses on the planet.

In recent months, Shiels has played Royal County Down, Royal Troon, Trump Turnberry, Royal Portrush, and Royal Birkdale. The 38-year-old clearly knows how to get a tee time at some of the most prestigious venues.

The Englishman also travels to the US to film content and was recently in South Carolina, home of YouTube duo the Bryan Bros. Perhaps surprisingly, Shiels wasn’t invited to the Creator Classic at East Lake despite being one of the biggest personalities within the scene.

Shiels’ knowledge is, of course, first-class, particularly in the UK, and the YouTube star has now revealed five courses that he believes go under the radar.

Speaking on the latest Rick Shiels Golf Show Podcast, Shiels was asked to name five ‘under the radar’ courses in the UK and Ireland.

“Wallasey, Crail, I would throw in North Berwick, Prestwick, Dunstanburgh,” Shiels said.

The Englishman recently played nine holes at Prestwick with Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay on his bag. Mackay famously caddied for Phil Mickelson during the lefty’s heyday.

Green fees at Wallasey, Crail, North Berwick, Prestwick and Dunstanburgh

For those potentially interested in playing Shiels’ recommendations, let’s take a look at the green fees. Wallasey Golf Club, located just north of Hoylake in Liverpool, is £110-£120 during the winter for 18 holes but rises to £195-£220 during the summer months.

Crail, just to the south of St Andrews, is slightly more reasonably priced, with fees ranging between £70 and £110.

At North Berwick, weekday fees are £185 between 1 March and 31 March 2025. However, after April 1, prices rise to £285. Prestwick, typically known as the home of The Open, ranges from £220 to £265, and Dunstanburgh is the most reasonably priced, with summer green fee rates maxing out at £48.
