Rick Shiels is one of the biggest names in the YouTube golf world, besides Bryson DeChambeau and Grant Horvat, and has been lucky enough to play some amazing courses.

Shiels was fortunate to be invited to play at Augusta National the day after Jon Rahm won the 2023 Masters Tournament.

Even most professional golfers never have the chance to play there, so it must have been a dream come true for the Englishman.

However, Shiels recently named a different major championship golf course as his favorite, ahead of Augusta National.

Rick Shiels names an Irish golf course as his favorite in the world

Everyone knows that Scotland and Ireland are a golfer’s dream, with so many spectacular courses, such as St Andrews and Royal Portrush.

Shiels even named one Irish venue as the best course he has ever played, ahead of the world-famous Augusta National.

“So number one, I don’t know if this was the evening that we got, or the fact that we didn’t think I was going to play it until we teed it up,” he explained. “I don’t know if it’s the fact that I played okay and pretty solid.

“I don’t know if it’s the fact that it has everything I want from a golf course in terms of history, the layout, the views – ocean and mountain views – the fact that we got the most perfect weather in the world.

“But my favourite golf course that I have ever played is Royal County Down. It’s incredible. It’s very difficult, and hopefully the video we shot there highlighted how good it was.

“It is so, so iconic. The scenery is outrageous. But take the scenery away and strip it all away, and the golf course – I remember every single hole, the elevation changes, I remember every shot you have to hit.

“It does get some criticism that you get too many blind tee shots, but I love blind tee shots if I’m honest with you. So much of it I absolutely love.”

Rory McIlroy recently named Royal County Down as his favorite golf course in Ireland, so it is not short of praise from public figures.

Rick Shiels shares his opinion on Augusta National after playing there

Although he picked Royal County Down at number one, Rick Shiels still had plenty of good things to say about Augusta National.

Shiels described the Masters venue as “absolutely perfect” after his experience of playing there two years ago.

“In at number two is Augusta National,” he added. “Augusta is heaven. It’s absolutely perfect. We get to see it once a year for The Masters, and every time, it blows everybody away, and if you have been lucky enough to go, it’s a special, special place.

“I think what is so special about it is that you know the holes. You know every single hole. You know the shots you should play, the iconic shots, the green elevations. It has got absolutely everything, and I have been so lucky to play it once.

“If someone said to me right now, could you finish now and say you have done Augusta? Yeah. I don’t need to play it again. It doesn’t mean I am going to say no to an invite to play Augusta National. It is unbelievable.

“And maybe I need to play it again to rank it higher; maybe I need to play it two or three times to fully appreciate it. But if you are to ask me right now and hold a gun to my head and say which one is number one and which one is number two, for me, Augusta National is number two.”
