Randy Smith was one of the first people to congratulate Scottie Scheffler after his dominant win at the PGA Championship on Sunday.
Scheffler has worked with Smith since the age of seven, so the 73-year-old from Wichita Falls deserves huge credit for the golfer who the world number one has become.
Interestingly, the 28-year-old’s week at Quail Hollow didn’t actually get off to the best of starts.
Scheffler’s driver was deemed to be non-conforming before the PGA Championship had even started, so he had to bring a new model into play.
That setback clearly didn’t affect the 28-year-old though, or at least not enough to stop him from winning.

The now three-time major champion only had his ‘B’ game all week, and still won by five. That must be scary for his rivals.
After his fine victory, Scheffler’s father told him just how tough of a competitor he was, and he’s not wrong there.
Now his coach Randy Smith has echoed a similar sentiment.
Randy Smith picks out Scottie Scheffler’s best round ever after the PGA Championship
Smith was a guest on SiriusXM PGA TOUR radio, and he discussed Scheffler’s fine win at Quail Hollow.
There is obviously so much to admire about the Texan’s game.
He is the best and most consistent ball-striker in the world, and his short game is second to none.
However, it could actually be argued that his biggest superpower is his mental strength.

He certainly needed to lean on that strength during his poor front-nine on Sunday!
And Smith made a quite extraordinary claim about Scheffler’s fine round at Quail Hollow.
“This kid is…that’s the best round he ever played in my opinion, bar none, and there has been some great ones. You know, you back at the closing at the Olympics and so forth and so on, but this round had everything in it. He was off, he knew he was off, and the ability to go to number 10 tee, and say mmmm. He knew, and he made a mid-course adjustment, and he got instant gratification off the 10th tee. I mean, it was instantaneous, he just kind of squared his shoulders up a little bit, lined up a little bit better down the fairway, hit the shot and that lit the fuse that lit the fuse. It doesn’t take two or three, it takes him maybe one. And once he knew he was back, the rest is history.“
Considering how many exceptional rounds of golf Scheffler has played, Smith’s claim about his final round of even-par really was rather astounding.
But at the same time, it was a completely understandable take from Smith, given the mental fortitude shown by the 28-year-old.
Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Championship stats prove one thing
The man from Dallas never knows when he’s beaten, does he?
Scheffler ran away with victory at Quail Hollow, whilst struggling with his game at times.
Here’s how his stats looked for the week.
| Category | Strokes gained | Scottie Scheffler’s field rank |
| Off the tee | 4.094 | 8th |
| Approach | 5.307 | 8th |
| Around the green | 4.833 | 5th |
| Putting | 2.604 | 25th |
| Total | 16.838 | 1st |
As you can see, Scheffler was not at his best off the tee, or with his irons or around the greens. He usually sits at the top of two of those statistical categories.
However, when you put all of his stats together, he came out on top in the number one position. And that’s what makes him so good.
Scheffler may not have the pizzazz of Bryson DeChambeau, or the on-course theatrics of Jon Rahm, but boy is he good. In fact, there isn’t anyone better in the world right now, or even close to him for that matter.
