Phil Mickelson fell just short of another lengthy stay at the US Open, with the six-time major champion missing the cut at Oakmont.

Mickelson could play at the 2026 US Open, which is scheduled for Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York this time next year.

LIV Golf star Mickelson missed the 2016 US Open cut the last time the major tournament was held in Oakmont.

And history has now repeated itself for the veteran golfer, who shot back-to-back 74s this week to finish on eight-over at the US Open.

With his missed cut at Oakmont, Mickelson has now missed another opportunity to complete the career grand slam.

Phil Mickelson called a ‘class act’ for what he did after US Open missed cut

But despite his certain disappointment, the American showed his true colours immediately after missing the cut by handing out gifts from his bag in the rain to the officers who walked with him.

And that led to many golf fans praising the legendary figure, with one reacting to the footage on X saying: “We love Phil.”

A fourth said: “Phil is a class act! Miss him playing the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Wish him the best.”

And other fans commented: “Always been class,” “Phil gets it unlike some others,” and “This is Phil being Phil.”

Phil Mickelson joins exclusive group despite US Open missed cut

Whether or not Mickelson takes on another US Open remains to be seen, with his lack of success there perhaps set to motivate him one more time.

He has narrowly missed out on the trophy over the years, having triumphed at the other three major championships.

But regardless of whether or not he can complete the career grand slam, Mickelson has already gone down as a golfing legend.

And he has further cemented that status despite missing the cut at Oakmont, having just made his 128th major start.

He has now overtaken Raymond Floyd into solo fifth place in the all-time list, which is topped by fellow legend Jack Nicklaus.

Mickelson also took on The Masters and the PGA Championship this season, although he also missed the cut at both events.

He will now turn his focus back to LIV Golf, with the 54-year-old currently occupying 11th place in the individual standings.

The HyFlyers GC captain has been enjoying himself on the tour so far this season, finishing T4 in Virginia right before heading to Oakmont.
