LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson is never afraid to make a controversial claim about himself or some of golf’s biggest names.
Whether that be Mickelson’s alleged 47 holes-in-one or the 54-year-old’s criticism of the PGA Tour since his move to LIV, the lefty lets his thoughts known.
Now, in a YouTube video with online personality Grant Horvat, Mickelson has made an outlandish major championship claim that he’s sure is true.
Phil Mickelson’s 2013 Open Championship claim

Famously, during the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield, Mickelson opted to remove his driver from the bag and instead use a strong-lofted three-wood.
The lefty’s precision off the tee played an essential part in his victory, and the American believes what he did on Scotland’s east coast was unique.
“I have won a major with zero drivers, the 2013 British,” Mickelson said in Horvat’s latest video.
“I have won a major with one driver, a few of them. And I won the 06 Masters with two drivers. So, I don’t believe that has ever been done before; I can say that with certainty. I don’t know if anyone has won a major without a driver, and I don’t know if anyone has won a major with two drivers.”
Mickelson won at Augusta in 2006 after using two drivers, finishing on a score of seven under, two shots clear of South African Tim Clark.
Tiger Woods only hits one driver at 2006 Open Championship
In a ploy to avoid fairway bunkers at the 2006 Open Championship at Hoylake, Tiger Woods opted to steer clear of his driver en route to victory.
The 15-time major winner opted to use his 2-iron off the tee and found a total of 0 fairway bunkers throughout the week.
“When I got to Hoylake, I had to decide whether to lay up in the fairway bunkers or try to fly them. They had redone the bunkers, and you couldn’t advance the ball. There were some that you had to hit it out sideways,” Woods said.
“By staying with my plan, I think I hit over 80% of the fairways utilising a 3-wood and a 2-iron.”
Woods, however, did have a driver in the bag at Hoylake, which does substantiate Mickelson’s claim. The six-time major winner could well be the only player to win a major, having opted to banish the big stick from his bag completely.
