The Wyndham Championship was the final regular season event of the PGA Tour season before the play-offs begin, and one player won’t be featuring at the play-offs after his disastrous finish on Sunday.
The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first FedEx Cup play-off event, and the PGA Tour‘s top 70 players are eligible to tee it up in Memphis next week.
Some players jumped inside the top-70 on the FedEx Cup points list at the Wyndham Championship last week, while others dropped outside of the
Cameron Young destroyed the field at the Wyndham Championship to finally secure his maiden PGA Tour title.
As Young ran away with the tournament, attention switched to the players ‘on the bubble’ who were battling it out to get inside the top-70 on the FedEx Cup points list.
One PGA Tour winner failed to do enough to keep his season going after inexplicably three-putting his final hole of the tournament.
Davis Thompson misses putt to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship
Scottie Scheffler won the regular season FedEx Cup bonus for sitting at the top of the points list.
Now it’s time for the play-offs, as the best in the world gather together in Memphis, before moving on to the BMW Championship and then the Tour Championship over the next two weeks.

However, Davis Thompson, who won the 2024 John Deere Classic, won’t be at any of those tournaments.
It was sheer agony for the 26-year-old as he three-putted the final green at Sedgefield Country Club on Sunday.
Thompson was faced with a six-foot putt for par, after racing his first attempt well past the hole.
However, he made an awful stroke on the short par putt and didn’t even hit the hole.
As a result, Thompson fell down from 68th spot in the FedEx Cup points list to outside the top-70.
It was a sad finish to a fairly underwhelming season in the end for the one-time PGA Tour winner.
How the FedExCup Playoffs work
The top-70 on the FedExCup points list are eligible to play at the St. Jude Classic this week.
After the week in Memphis, the field for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club will be cut down to just 50 players.
The player leading the FedEx Cup points list after the BMW Championship list will receive a $5 million bonus.
Following the BMW, the top 30 players will qualify to play in the Tour Championship at East Lake at the end of August.
There will be no starting strokes this time – everyone starts at even-par.
Whichever player wins the tournament bags a $10 million bonus. Getting into the Tour Championship is extremely lucrative, and it’s not possible to do that if you miss out on the top-70 to begin with.
Thompson must be absolutely kicking himself this morning.
