It sometimes feels like we can’t go a week without the PGA Tour getting some sort of criticism and while Scottie Scheffler is dominating at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week, the TOUR itself is being hammered again due to Scheffler.

Scheffler carded a round of 61 in his first round before scoring a 63 in round two. Scheffler is now joint second for lowest 36 hole scores, and is on course to finally win his first event of the season.

The world number one has had to sit back and watch Rory McIlroy take much of the acclaim in 2025 so far but at the Byron Nelson, he’s looking unstoppable.

With the PGA Championship just around the corner, Scheffler appears to have found form at just the right time.

However, it is because of a decision from Scheffler that the PGA Tour is now coming under fire from fans again.

Golf fans slam PGA Tour after Scottie Scheffler news

It’s not unusual for fans on social media to lay into the PGA Tour and in the last 12 months we’ve seen fans complain about slow play, TV coverage, and more.

However, after journalist Matt Vincenzi shared news of Scottie Scheffler not competing at the Truist Championship next week – a signature event – fans have once again jumped at the TOUR.

One fan labelled the TOUR a ‘total joke’ for putting signature events so close to a major, while more fans seemed to take the same approach in their criticism.

Another commented on how sponsors would feel about such big names being missing.

“If the best players committed and playing the signature events you wonder what the point is Must be a tough sell with sponsors”

While another suggested some of the events might as well be on the Korn Ferry Tour.

“The Pgat schedule is a joke and why 1/3 of the events should be on the korn ferry tour.”

Carrying on the criticism, one fan couldn’t help but mention PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan.

“Tour is a joke. How does Monahan have a job?”

While another made the point about Rory McIlroy as they defender Scheffler’s decison.

“Rory did the same thing a few years back!”

The PGA Tour needs a reshuffle of sorts

There is no harm in players missing certain events but there is also a big argument to be had that the TOUR simply has too many events and in doing so, it means the top dogs like Scheffler pull out of decent sized events.

Sure, Scheffler’s reasoning here will be fine and ahead of a big major, he’ll want to be well-rested and in the best place possible with his game.

However, it begs the question over the future of certain events and with sponsors pouring money in to see the best in the world, having the world number one missing won’t sit well with some.

Going forward, the PGA Tour might well have look to at some of its events and yes, while it’s not all about the top few in the world, money makes the world go around and if more top players withdraw, then sponsors will think twice.
