Ludvig Aberg proved why there have been such high hopes for the Swede over the last two years, as he produced a brilliant performance on Sunday at Torrey Pines to win the Genesis Invitational.
Ludvig Aberg secured his second PGA Tour victory as he won by one over Maverick McNealy. There was a period where the 25-year-old appeared to be out of contention after two bogeys in his first five holes in the final round. With that, Aberg was barely shown on the television coverage.
However, he was flawless for the rest of his day, making six birdies – and eight in total – to get across the line at the Genesis Invitational.
Aberg’s performance impressed Tiger Woods, who was the host at Torrey Pines. And the win prompted Johnson Wagner to tip Aberg as the next world number one.
PGA Tour history made as Ludvig Aberg wins the Genesis Invitational
But history, as it turns out, was also made with Aberg’s win at Torrey Pines.
Much has been made of the fact that Harris English is the only American to win so far this season, with English also triumphing at Torrey at the Farmers Insurance Open.

It turns out that this season marks the first time in PGA Tour history that there have been seven winners from seven different countries to start the year.
Europe making a real statement ahead of the Ryder Cup
Of course, few people will take greater joy from the start of the season than Luke Donald. The European Ryder Cup captain has seen a number of his potential options win on tour, while Keegan Bradley is still waiting for his heavyweights to get going.
Aberg follows Sepp Straka, Rory McIlroy and Thomas Detry in winning in 2025. Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama and Nick Taylor complete the list.
| Tournament | Winner | Nationality |
| The Sentry | Hideki Matsuyama | Japanese |
| Sony Open | Nick Taylor | Canadian |
| The American Express | Sepp Straka | Austrian |
| Farmers Insurance Open | Harris English | American |
| AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am | Rory McIlroy | Northern Irish |
| WM Phoenix Open | Thomas Detry | Belgian |
| Genesis Invitational | Ludvig Aberg | Swedish |
Aberg, Straka and McIlroy were all in Donald’s team for 2023. And, while there is potentially a question mark over Straka’s place at this stage, only injury can surely stop Aberg and McIlroy being at Bethpage Black later this year.
The Americans will know that peaking at this stage of the season is not particularly important. Most of the biggest events are still to come. But clearly, Europe has seized the psychological advantage.
