Ludvig Aberg produced a masterclass on the back nine on Sunday to win the Genesis Invitational by one shot and secure his second PGA Tour title.
Heading into the final round, it always appeared possible that someone would emerge from the chasing pack and potentially snatch the Genesis Invitational title. And for a decent part of Sunday’s round, it looked set to be Maverick McNealy who got the job done.
McNealy was unbelievable on the greens and posted a stunning 64. But ultimately, it was only enough for second place, with Ludvig Aberg winning by one at Torrey Pines.
Aberg’s challenge appeared to be over when he bogeyed two of his first five holes. But six birdies in his remaining 13 holes – which included a superb two-putt on the last – ensured that the Swede emerged victorious.
Tiger Woods lauds Ludvig Aberg during the final round of the Genesis Invitational
Of course, Tiger Woods is the tournament host. And while Woods was not ready to tee it up this week, he was in attendance for the final day.

And as it appeared that Aberg was very much in the mix to win, Woods told CBS Sports just how impressed he has been by the 25-year-old.
“Ludvig’s swing, it really is not a lot can go wrong with it. Occasionally he might speed up a little bit and get stuck under it but other than that he hits this tight little draw. Beautiful draw and on top of that he is a super nice guy,” he said.
Redemption for Ludvig Aberg at Torrey Pines
Of course, it was not Aberg’s first visit to Torrey Pines this year. He had led after the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open earlier in the season before illness put paid to his hopes of winning that event.
But he clearly took some confidence from the start of that week. And every part of his game was supremely impressive in his victory, as he gained more than 12 shots on the field over the tournament.
| Strokes gained category | Total | Ludvig Aberg’s rank |
| Off the tee | 2.858 | 4th |
| Approach | 5.430 | 4th |
| Around the green | 1.716 | 15th |
| Putting | 2.316 | 18th |
| Total | 12.319 | 1st |
Aberg has been knocking on the door for some time when it comes to winning a big event on the PGA Tour. He will need no-one to tell him what the next step now is.
