Pete Cowen says there’s a ‘fault’ in Rory McIlroy’s swing he’s had for a very long time now

Rory McIlroy has had a bit of a disastrous last month or so and his former coach believes a swing issue isn’t helping.

McIlroy endured the nightmare of his US Open loss but then came back to life at the Scottish Open.

However, a dismal display around Royal Troon – where McIlroy admitted the weather got the better of him again – capped a poor five weeks for the 35-year-old.

Of course, McIlroy remains one of the best players in the world and he’ll have a well-versed plan on what he needs to do to improve.

But one man who it might be worth checking in with for McIlroy is his former coach, Pete Cowen.

And speaking about McIlroy’s form and in particular, his swing, Cowen believes there’s something McIlroy has always done that’s holding him back.

Pete Cowen shares exactly what Rory McIlroy is doing wrong in his swing

Speaking in an interview for Bunkered, Cowen says he can see exactly what the issue is in Rory’s swing and that McIlroy himself will be aware of it as well.

“He’s got the same fault all the time. The good thing about it is it’s the same fault, but that’s also the bad thing about it. He knows exactly what he does,” Cowen said.

“He drops (the club) under a bit and starts flipping it a bit and doesn’t get under any pressure on it so struggles with the ball flight.

“But he knows he’s had the same problem for a long time. He does address it and sometimes when he’s addressed it he plays great and wins.

“These guys are so good so most of it is down to the mental side of the game. Expectations come into it. Course setup comes into it for certain players because when the course is set up for certain players, it doesn’t suit other players.”

Cowen has, of course, coached some of the best players ever.

The likes of McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, and Brooks Koepka are all known to have worked with him in the past.

McIlroy, then, might be wise to spend a bit of time with Cowen in preparation for going again in 2025.

McIlroy’s poor performance at The Open coupled with Xander Schauffele’s win, meant he dropped to third in the world rankings.
