The 2024 major championship season has passed, and the Official World Golf Rankings have a fresh look.
Xander Schauffele landed his second major title at The Open Championship, and, as a result, many fans have claimed the 30-year-old has had a better year than Scottie Scheffler.
Two players who didn’t enjoy their time on Scotland’s west coast were Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy angered fans after appearing to give up during his second round, and US Open champion DeChambeau failed to adapt to the hazardous conditions.
OWGR updated after The Open Championship

As a result of The Open, there has been some movement in the latest world rankings.
Scheffler, of course, remains number one due to his remarkable performance thus far in 2024. Schauffele has now replaced McIlroy in second after the Northern Irishman missed the cut.
The four-time major winner now sits third ahead of Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.
One of the biggest winners was Justin Rose after his T2 finish. The Englishman has jumped from 67th to 34th, giving his 2025 major championship chances a massive boost.
Xander Schauffele rightfully the world’s second-best player
Schauffele’s win at Royal Troon has seen comparisons made with Scheffler.
Of course, regarding the tournaments he’s won, getting two majors in the bag is preferable compared to PGA Tour events.
But, when it comes to who has performed better, it’s hard to look past the world number one. Scheffler has beaten Schauffele numerous times this season in traditional PGA Tour events.
There can be no doubting Schauffele’s standings as the world’s second-best player, but his recent success shouldn’t detract from what Scheffler has done this season; it’s been nothing short of remarkable.
