Rory McIlroy’s wait for a fifth major goes on after he suffered a shock exit at The Open this week.

McIlroy was going into Royal Troon as one of the favourites but he succumbed to the conditions in the end and limped out of the tournament at 11 over par.

McIlroy was right on the cut line from the get-go before a triple bogey on the fourth hole all but condemned him to a place back on the plane this weekend.

The Northern Irishman battled hard from there and played the back nine well, making two birdies down the stretch to bring some relief.

But on the whole, it was just not good enough from the 35-year-old and he’s admitted that he suffered the same issue at Troon as he did at Augusta.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his second round saw him exit the tournament, McIlroy conceded that when it comes to windy conditions, it’s perhaps something he needs to get a grip of.

“I think even at Augusta I felt like the conditions on the Friday, it was super windy, I felt like they got the better of me and here again,” McIlroy said.

“The scoring was super low at the PGA and I couldn’t keep up with Xander and Bryson. The US Open was obviously the big one where I had such a great opportunity and let it slip through my fingers.”

“I think I have to remind myself that I am close and you have to keep giving yourself chances. I said at the US Open last year I would go through 100 Sundays to get my hands on another major, he continued.

“These disappointing Sundays are racking up but I would rather have disappointing Sundays than be going home on a Friday night.

“I have to reflect on the windy conditions in two of the majors this year got the better of me and maybe that’s something I have to address going forward.”

McIlroy needs to reset and go again

There was some quite remarkable golf on display around Royal Troon today, and not in a good way either.

McIlroy’s shocking snap hook on the sixth left a whole load of golf fans stunned at what they’d seen, while it was always going to be difficult after reports of bad vibes among McIlroy’s group on day one.

Of course, the PGA season will continue and McIlroy will hope to finish strong and try and do well in the FedEx Cup.

But in terms of the majors, McIlroy just needs to reset and come again in 2025.

As he says here, the weather has beaten him twice this year and that’s something that he can try and work on, somehow, over the next six months.

McIlroy is too good to not win another major. But as time ticks by, chances slip away.
