Plenty of golf fans were left absolutely stunned by what Rory McIlroy did on the sixth hole during his second round at The Open Championship as the Northern Irishman endured a nightmare start to his day.
Rory McIlroy faced having to produce a masterclass if he was going to bring himself back into contention at Royal Troon after a miserable first day for the 35-year-old. But with the weather conditions causing plenty of havoc, there was an opportunity for McIlroy to make the weekend.
Unfortunately, McIlroy’s hopes of making the cut at The Open were largely dashed after four holes of second round, with the 2014 champion following a bogey on the third with an eight on the fourth.

But perhaps the worst shot of the lot came two holes later, with McIlroy 93 yards away from the pin with his third shot on the par five. He took an eight iron, seemingly looking to chip the ball onto the green in the face of the wind.

However, McIlroy seemed to take almost a full swing at the ball and sent it so far left of the green. It almost appeared to go near a section of the crowd who were looking at another group on a completely different hole.
He was able to put the ball back onto the green, but he was some distance away for his par putt. Unsurprisingly, he ended up making a bogey to move to +13.
‘Tough watch this’
Of course, it is easy to criticise when most will never have any idea of what it is like to play in a major championship, but McIlroy is one of the most talented golfers the game has ever seen, with four major titles to his name. He could have so easily been the winner of the most recent major championship heading into The Open.
So it was truly remarkable that McIlroy produced such a wayward shot on that sixth hole, and plenty of viewers were absolutely stunned by what happened…
