Patrick Cantlay is looking to continue his excellent match-play record, and the 32-year-old believes the USA have a significant advantage ahead of the 2024 Presidents Cup.

Jim Furyk’s 12-man United States Team has assembled at Royal Montreal ahead of Thursday’s first round of matches.

Cantlay is primed to partner Xander Schauffele as the USA eye a tenth consecutive Presidents Cup victory.

The 32-year-old, speaking during his pre-tournament press conference, believes the United States have an advantage ahead of the event.

The United States, unlike Europe and the International Team, play a team event every single year, with the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup played biannually.

And Cantlay believes that consistent exposure to team golf gives the USA the upper hand.

“The format is a little different, being an extra day here and playing 10 in a session versus eight in a session. I think that strikes me as one of the biggest differences of this week versus Ryder Cup week,” Cantlay explained.

“But in general, from our side, it’s pretty similar. It’s a lot of the same captains. It’s a lot of the same players. I think overall it’s an advantage that we get a team event every year for the U.S.”

Patrick Cantlay could be one to watch at the Presidents Cup

After winning six points in his Presidents Cup career, Cantlay could well be one to watch this week.

The American has proven himself in a match-play environment and will undoubtedly play a vital role if a tenth consecutive victory is achieved.

12 months ago in Rome, Cantlay also registered two points, a feat that perhaps gets forgotten given the dramatic nature of the event.

The eight-time PGA Tour winner is clearly enjoying the yearly matches for the USA and will almost certainly be part of the team which will face Luke Donald’s Europe at Bethpage Black next September.
