Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele have been the standout players during the 2024 PGA Tour season after claiming nine tournaments and three major championships between them.

As a result, several high-profile names have attempted to determine who has actually had the better campaign.

YouTube star Rick Shiels says Scheffler should be named Player of the Year, whereas Smylie Kaufman claimed that many pros would prefer Schauffele’s record.

Ahead of the St Jude Championship in Memphis, the discourse shows no sign of letting up, and Patrick Cantlay is the latest to share his thoughts.

Cantlay is good friends with Schauffele, and it wouldn’t have come as a surprise to see the 32-year-old side with the world number two. Instead, Cantlay lauded Scheffler’s season when discussing the Player of the Year award.

“I’m sure a lot of people will start to ask themselves that when the voting comes for player of the year so some of it will be decided by how they play in the next three weeks,” Cantlay explained.

“But I think Scottie has played unbelievable golf and with the amount of tournament wins he’s had, it’s been super impressive.”

Most PGA Tour players would swap records with Xander Schauffele

Irrespective of Scheffler’s remarkable 2024 form, most PGA Tour players would swap records with Schauffele.

The game’s greatest players are made in the majors, and Schauffele’s double-winning season will go down in the history books.

Of course, Scheffler also captured the Masters, but the world number one’s failure in the PGA Championship, US Open and Open means Schauffele’s record has the edge.

For world number one to indeed be considered one of the greatest players ever, he needs to start winning majors outside the Masters. Until that point, he cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.
