Padraig Harrington has been speaking about a number of things golf related this week and had some high praise for world number one, Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler has had an extraordinary start to the 2024 and has won a series of big events, including taking his second green jacket at The Masters a few weeks back.

The 27-year-old’s rise to world number one has seen some of the most dominant golf we’ve seen on the PGA Tour in many a year.

Some are even suggesting he is playing at a level not seen since Tiger Woods and there’s even been claims he could win all four majors this year.

And mentioning Scheffler when discussing iron shots into the greens, two-time major winner Padraig Harrington has said the world number has something ‘unbelievable’ in his game.

Padraig Harrington says Scottie Scheffler did something ‘unbelievable’ at The Masters

Speaking on Peter Finch’s YouTube channel, Harrington explained how spin control is absolutely key to successful golf, and highlighted Scheffler following Tiger Woods in being so good with it.

“Most of the time in a Champions Tour event I’m trying to take spin off. Whereas when you go to a Tour event, doesn’t matter how windy it is, you still try and put spin on it for some reason, because the greens are so much firmer and faster,” Harrington said.

“Like one of the reasons Scottie won The Masters was his spin control was unbelievable. Was more how much spin he put on his iron shots, some weeks it’s not any use but when you get to the big tournaments and the greens get firmer and faster, the most important thing in golf…and Tiger was brilliant at it and Scottie seems brilliant at it too, is being able to get your ball to finish as close to your pitch-mark as possible.”

Scottie Scheffler is making everyone else look average

This is an interesting insight from Harrington and when you look back at Scheffler’s win at The Masters, he very much did what’s mentioned here.

Scheffler’s approach play from tee to green is on another planet right now and when he turns up and makes just a few putts, he’s basically in contention to win every week.

Quite who goes on and stops Scheffler this year remains to be seen. Even when the top players play well, it’s proving not good enough to be on the level of the world number one.

As Harrington says, he’s doing something with his irons that only Tiger Woods really managed and in essence, that is a scary thought for the rest of the tour.
