The ZOZO Championship is now in the bag and while many pined for Justin Thomas to take the win, it was Nicolas Echavarria who saw success.

Echavarria held off the challenge from Thomas and Max Greyserman to card a final round of three under par and complete a fine week out in Japan.

While Thomas had wowed fans with his shot skipping off the water in round three, Echavarria kept himself together and didn’t need anything spectacular, as a solid display from tee to green and then steady putting kept him ahead of the American chasers.

For Echavarria, the win at the ZOZO was his second on the PGA Tour and means he now qualifies automatically for some of the biggest events in 2025.

However, while getting a second win will feel impressive and big for Echavarria, he also managed to take a record off of Tiger Woods in doing so.

Nicolas Echavarria breaks Tiger Woods scoring record at the ZOZO Championship

For a lot of players in golf, Tiger Woods is the pinnacle of the game and the best to ever do it.

So if a player can take a record off the 15-time major winner at some point in their career, then that’s a massive added bonus for them.

Indeed, this week’s score of 260 over four rounds for Echavarria means he has now taken a record off of Tiger.

Woods shot a 261 at the ZOZO back in 2019 and until now, hasn’t looked like being surpassed.

But Echavarria has done just that while Thomas and Greyserman have even tied Woods for the previous record at the same time.

Echavarria had admitted that he was simply sticking to his plan on the final day and simply hoping it would be enough to see off Thomas.

In the end, it was enough and with a big 2025 to come, Echavarria will fancy himself to compete against the big names once more as the season progresses.
