Nelly Korda carded a level-par 72 as the world number one got her Olympic title defence underway at Le Golf National.
Korda is part of an American trio looking to emulate Scottie Scheffler’s success at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.
The world number one, however, has work to do after French favourite Céline Boutier carded a stunning seven under 65 to lead after the first round.
The American is looking to get her season back on track after a disappointing run of form. Before the first round, Korda outlined a similar aim to Scheffler, and the 26-year-old will need to go low over the next three days if she’s to land back-to-back Olympic golds.
Nelly Korda stunned by what she witnessed on the first tee at Le Golf National

Speaking after her first 18, Korda admitted she was stunned by the crowds at Le Golf National.
“Yeah, I saw the crowds for the men, and to see the similar crowds for the women is just kind of for me mind-blowing,” the American explained. “I wasn’t sure what to expect walking onto that first tee, and obviously, my first view was the tee.”
The 26-year-old then shed light on what she told her caddie on the first tee.
“Then I kind of looked out to the green, and I just saw like four people deep, and I told Jason, I was like, oh my gosh, this is absolutely amazing,” the world number added. “Like, I did not expect this many people to come out and support everyone out here.”
Olympic support at Le Golf National shows no sign of letting up
Jason Day was left completely shocked by the support he received on the first tee box, and the crowds in Paris are showing no sign of letting up for the women’s event.
The atmosphere generated at Le Golf National has been lauded over the past two weeks, and the PGA Tour and LIV Golf should examine it.
It feels like the crowds at the Olympics are the happy medium between the rival tours. The PGA Tour sometimes needs a little more energy, whereas LIV can sometimes get out of hand.
At Le Golf National, it feels as if the players are enjoying the atmosphere without any unsavoury incidents occurring, unlike what was witnessed at LIV Golf’s JCB event.
Those in positions of power at the breakaway tour and PGA would be wise to learn from what has been a simply brilliant event in the Fench capital.
