Min Woo Lee will be heading into The Masters riding high on confidence after his win at The Houston Open two weeks ago.
If Augusta National was built for one player in particular, it is Min Woo Lee.
The Australian’s prodigious length off the tee will undoubtedly be a huge advantage for him at The Masters.
Earlier this week, Min Woo Lee boldly exclaimed that he’s capable of winning The Masters.
That kind of confidence is what makes a champion, and Min Woo is certainly has that in abundance.
Will 2025 be his year at Augusta National though?
Min Woo Lee has an issue which could stop him from winning The Masters
Brandel Chamblee has been speaking about the 26-year-old’s chance of being handed a green jacket on Sunday evening.
Many people fancy Min Woo Lee’s chances at The Masters this year – his game is ideally suited to the challenges that await him at Augusta.
Chamblee explained how one thing might hold him back though, when speaking on The Skip Bayless Show:
“He gets 190mph ball speed and he is a fabulous putter and chipper and he just had a lot of flair and he is fun loving. He is a wonderful kid to pull for. What he did after he drove in the water on 16 [at Houston] to get up there and find the fairway and knock it on the green and the two putt at the last from 60 feet. He is an easy kid to pull for and he could be a mega star.
“But, look, [Houston] was a pretty darn good golf course for him in that it gives you room off the tee and you have to scramble and he is great at scrambling.
“But the most important thing at Augusta National is your iron play from 150 to 200 yards, you get more of those shots at any other golf course and you have to be so precise with them. That is not his forte.
So he is going to have the odd double bogey here and there and you almost cannot make a double bogey in win the Masters. If you go back 25 years, that’s 25 times someone has won playing 72 holes, that is 1800 holes they have played. There has only been six doubles made amongst people that have won. That is a very low percentage and he makes too many big numbers.“
Min Woo Lee certainly showed that he has a destructive shot in his bag when he won The Houston Open, after he blocked his tee shot miles to the right on the 16th hole.
The wayward drive led to a bogey, but he will be punished a lot more if he replicates that exact shot at Augusta this week.
He will definitely need to tighten up his game if he is to win around Augusta’s fabled turf.
Players who’ve made double bogies or worse on way to winning The Masters
Only six Masters champions in the last 25 years have recorded double bogies en route to victory.
And just three Masters champions have made doubles or worse from 2015 onwards – Jordan Spieth in 2015, John Rahm in 2023 and Scottie Scheffler twice in 2022 and 2024.
It’s clear to see that on the whole, Masters champions do not make double bogies, although in more recent times the trend does seem to be reversing.
If Min Woo Lee is to conquer Augusta National and win The Masters, the likelihood is that he will have to avoid double bogies or worse this week.
He has the short-game to do it, but will his driver behave itself? That remains to be seen.
