The International Team are under serious pressure heading into day two of the Presidents Cup and captain Mike Weir is coming under fire already.

Weir watched on as his team battled hard but ultimately ended up losing 5-0 to leave themselves with a mountain to climb.

For Weir and his team, the next round of foursomes is going to be massive and with Team USA’s impressive record in that format, the writing could be on the wall for the Internationals.

Still, Weir will be expecting his team to go out and put up a fight, albeit they will be doing it without two of their most popular and prolific players.

Both Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee have been ‘benched’ by Weir, who insisted the decision was part of a plan all along.

However, discussing Kim and Lee not playing, Ryan Lavner has questioned Weir’s logic given the current deficit.

Mike Weir criticised for Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee decision at the Presidents Cup

Speaking on the Golf Channel about the decision to drop Kim and Min Woo to the ‘bench’ for the foursomes, Lavner admitted he was completely baffled by the decision from Weir.

“Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee sitting for internationals. Another head scratcher for me from Mike Weir there,” Lavner said.

“If you are needing a boost, if you are trying to overcome a 5-0 deficit, if you are trying to win for the first time since 1998, how do you leave Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee, your most energetic human spark plugs, on the bench in what will be an incredibly pivotal day for the Internationals to try and get into this thing?

“It does not make a whole lot of sense to me.”

Presidents Cup could be over by Saturday

While the matches were close on Friday, the fact remains that Team USA are five up and have left the Internationals with an enormous task.

For Mike Weir, sticking to the plan is the obvious play.

However, Lavner is right and in Kim and Lee, he’s effectively dropping two of his best players to the side-lines when everything is on the line.

If the second day ends with Team USA completing another white wash, then the pressure will be on Weir and it will effectively make the weekend pointless.
