Max Homa has analysed his US Open record as he seeks his first title of the season at the Zozo Championship.

Homa enjoyed watching Angel Hidalgo’s swing at the Andalucia Masters last week on the DP World Tour, but his focus now switches to the PGA Tour.

The former is in Japan for the latest event on the FedEx Cup Fall schedule, with four of the eight tournaments now over.

Homa missed the cut at the Procore Championship in his last individual event, before helping the US Team win the Presidents Cup.

He has now returned to individual action, and is aiming for Zozo Championship success at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club.

Max Homa shares improvements after his US Open struggles

Homa heads into the event in Japan without a PGA Tour win this season, having secured three top-10 finishes.

Speaking in his Zozo Championship press conference, he discussed improvements to his game, leading back to his missed cut at the US Open.

“It shows in my US Open record,” said Homa. “I have never played well there and it’s because I am very impatient. I struggle to accept bogeys at times, I try to hit the hardest shot possible a lot.

“A lot of that goes to general attitude and mental game. I feel like I have gotten a lot better at that this year. I learnt a lot from the US Open, although I didn’t play well. That’s when I recognised that’s why this event beats me up so badly.

“I feel like I did a better job this season while I was playing of trying to attack things I am good at or felt comfortable with, rather than trying so hard to make everything be perfect. A lot of that gets bogged down and probably doesn’t show when you don’t drive the ball well.

“I also thought my short game made another big jump. The last two years I have gotten really good with the short game. The one benefit of not hitting a lot of greens is you get to chip a lot.

“I felt like I improved a lot on that this season. Things that probably you don’t see, but I know and feel. There are a lot of things internally I feel like I really grew this year.”

How did Max Homa do at the US Open and the other 2024 majors?

The US Open at Pinehurst represents one of four missed cuts from Homa in 2024, in what has been a rollercoaster season for the American.

He produced a superb display to finish T3 at the Masters, followed by T35 and T43 finishes at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship respectively.

Homa now has the chance to end his season on a positive note, beginning with a strong showing at the Zozo Championship.

But his recent Presidents Cup teammates Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala will also be eyeing the top prize.

Their compatriot Justin Thomas meanwhile is another, like Homa, who will be really eager to come out on top in Japan after his troubles at times this season.
