The FedEx Cup fall stretch of the PGA Tour season continues as this week’s WWT Championship in Mexico.

El Cardonal at Diamante, designed by Tiger Woods, is the venue in Cabo San Lucas. Blustery conditions greeted the field on Thursday before play was suspended. Tom Whitney, Rico Hoey, and Kevin Streelman all share the lead on five under.

Red-hot putter Taylor Montgomery is in a tie for fourth, along with Erik van Rooyen, Max Greyserman, Nate Lashley, Austin Eckroat, Kelly Kraft and Ryan McCormick.

Greyserman, who is still searching for his first PGA Tour win, shared his thoughts after his first 18 and admitted there may be an issue with the Woods-designed course.

Speaking after his round, 2024 Wyndham Championship runner-up Greyserman admitted he likes the more challenging conditions.

“I would say [I prefer] tougher conditions,” the American said. “This course is very different from what we usually play. Probably not my preference, to be honest, but it’s a challenge every week. You get a different challenge, which is great about golf. It’s pretty wide off the tee here, but this course is meant to play with the wind, so the way it played today is how it’s meant to play. I heard last year that there wasn’t really much wind, so I think it’s a better golf course in this amount of wind.”

Greyserman claimed that the Woods-designed course throws up some “weird” bounces from time to time.

“We couldn’t make a comparison. It’s like Corales off the tee, I guess, but around the greens, it’s like Pinehurst number two at times,” he added. “They have some pretty funky greens here.

“I don’t really know what a Tiger-designed course looks like, to be honest. They have some pretty funky greens; it’s fun. I would like to come back and play in different winds for fun, but I wouldn’t necessarily want to play a tournament on this golf course because you get some weird bounces, but that’s part of the game.”

Tiger Woods set to design new Texas course

Tiger has designed ten more courses, including El Cardonal at Diamante, and another is on the way.

The 15-time major winner is once again teaming up with Bluejack Ranch to create a new course in Aledo, Texas.

“It’s extremely motivating for me to contribute to the golfing legacy of Fort Worth, and I’m excited to see what we’ll build together. We’ll share more after our next design meeting in Aledo,” Wood said on his website.

Woods certainly has a lot on his plate at the moment. The 48-year-old is reportedly playing an important role in the PGA Tour negotiations with the PIF. Furthermore, Woods is set to feature in the inaugural TGL, which starts in January.

All these commitments come as Woods recovers from yet another back surgery, which took place in September.
