Ludvig Aberg is in the field for this year’s Players Championship, but there will be no appearance from Tiger Woods once more.

Woods has been told to retire by many golf fans, having just confirmed that he has undergone surgery after rupturing his achilles.

Aberg and Woods shared a nice moment earlier in the season, when the former emerged victorious at the Genesis Invitational.

The Swede stormed to victory at Torrey Pines, and posed with the trophy with 82-time PGA Tour winner Woods.

Aberg now turns his focus to TPC Sawgrass, with Scottie Scheffler the two-time defending champion of the Players Championship.

Ludvig Aberg wishes Tiger Woods a ‘speedy recovery’ after surgery

But Aberg did take time to discuss Woods in his pre-tournament press conference, having been asked for his reaction to the successful surgery announcement.

“Yeah, that was news to me as well now when you just said it,” responded Aberg. “Obviously it’s very unfortunate. But, yeah, I mean I wish him a speedy recovery and hope everything goes well.”

Fortunately the achilles surgery has been a success, but it remains to be seen how quickly Woods can recover.

Moreover, given his seemingly constant injury problems, a full recovery may not exactly be possible for the 15-time major champion.

It comes at a very unfortunate time for the 49-year-old, with the Masters arriving shortly after the Players.

Aberg meanwhile is aiming for an improvement to his game, with a T22 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational his latest result in the 2025 season.

Asked about his game right now, and if there is an area that he feels needs to be improved, Aberg said: “I felt like last week was a great test, and I felt like tee to green it was good enough to post a really good score.

“I felt like last week what sort of held me back was mostly not really getting the ball up-and-down, not really putting the way I wanted to at times.

“Last week was kind of a weird one because it felt like every time I missed a green I made a bogey and it was really frustrating and there was no real momentum.

“There was no wind in the sails, so it felt like I was just treading water for a while. So ideally I would like to get that fixed a little bit more.

“I would like to be able to get the ball up-and-down a little bit more often. I would like to deal especially with the rough… I felt like from the fairway it was fine, but judging the lies off the rough last week was tricky when it was first it was wet and then it got dry and then the changing in conditions.

“So I would like to get that a little bit better. But overall tee to green I felt like it was good enough to play well.”
