Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick are two of Europe’s most in-form players heading into the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Aberg had an underwhelming PGA Tour season, besides his victory at the Genesis Invitational, until the FedEx Cup Playoffs in August.

He then achieved back-to-back top 10 finishes at the FedEx St Jude Championship and the BMW Championship.

Fitzpatrick struggled with his game in the first half of the 2025 season, but his form completely turned around after the PGA Championship in May.

After playing together in the first round at the BMW PGA Championship, Aberg has now shared what his relationship with Fitzpatrick is like.

Ludvig Aberg wants to play with Matt Fitzpatrick at the Ryder Cup

Aberg tied the lead with his eight-under-par 64 on Thursday at the Wentworth Club, and Fitzpatrick was only two strokes behind.

Of course, there is a long way to go, but European captain Luke Donald will be pleased to see how comfortable they were playing together.

Aberg even admitted in his press conference after the first round of the BMW PGA Championship that he would like to be paired with Fitzpatrick at Bethpage Black.

“Yeah, Matt, we get along great,” he said. “He’s a great guy. It’s very easy to be around him, and we can chat about all sorts of things that are not even golf-related, so that’s always nice.

“Today was one of those days where we both played pretty well. Hopefully, we can do that in New York in a couple of weeks’ time, too.”

Aberg’s putting was particularly impressive, which bodes well for the Ryder Cup, as it’s obviously an important aspect of matchplay competition.

“It was very efficient,” he added. “I felt like once I got on the greens, I was rolling the putter really nicely and tried to be aggressive with the speed. Managed to make a lot of putts, which is nice.

“Any time you shoot that kind of score, I think you need to be good on the greens, and that was what it was today.

Ludvig Aberg loves the BMW PGA Championship

Ludvig Aberg made his BMW PGA Championship debut in 2023 and led the tournament before the final round.

Unfortunately, he shot a four-over-par 76 on Sunday to fall to 10th place, but he still could not wait to return to Wentworth.

“It’s one of my favourite events of the year,” Aberg continued. “I think I said that multiple times in the last couple of days, and it’s really nice to be here.

“Obviously, the golf course is in great shape, and the crowds are always amazing. It’s a treat to play here and it’s a treat to play well here, as well.”

Aberg has put himself in a strong position to contend at the tournament again this week, and hopefully, he can enjoy a better final round.
