Tyrrell Hatton made plenty of headlines during the DP World Tour Championship last week, with the Englishman coming in for criticism for some of his actions across the tournament.

Of course, it is no secret that Tyrrell Hatton is one of the most polarising characters at the top of the golfing world. He is undoubtedly one of the very best players on the planet right now, but he also has the potential to frustrate fans with some of his outbursts.

Hatton strongly criticised the 18th hole on the Earth Course before he had even hit his approach during the first round at the DP World Tour Championship. Meanwhile, Hatton was labelled a terrible influence after snapping his club on Saturday after just missing the green.

Nick Dougherty admitted after the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship this year – which Hatton won – that the broadcasters grow tired of apologising for Hatton’s behaviour. But it would appear that not everyone has a problem with how he acts on the course.

David Puig suggests what it is really like to play alongside Tyrrell Hatton

Speaking on Subpar about some of the fieriest characters on LIV, David Puig suggested that he absolutely loves playing alongside Hatton.

“Tyrrell, I just love the guy, I forgot about him. He’s great, but he gets pretty dicey. I can’t stop laughing when he says all that. You’re standing next to him and he’s saying all these things, and you’re next to him like, ‘—-, I love this man’,” he said.

“We’re playing with him in Vegas this year, it’s the last day, the weather was so bad. It was blowing like 30 miles an hour, it’s pretty bad, and he’s 10th at the time, eighth or ninth, he’s playing pretty good, and he hits this one 10 yards to the right and he looks at me and Alberto and he’s like, ‘that’s the worst I’ve swung a club in the last eight years’. And the guy was probably 10 under par at the time. I’m like, ‘dude, what are you talking about? I literally see every piece of rough this golf course has’.”

Why Hatton is being defended by some amid strong criticism

Puig is certainly not the only one to defend Hatton. Speaking this week, journalist Michael McEwan hit out at those who chastise Hatton while also demanding more characters in the game.

Of course, Hatton does look a bit ridiculous when he comes out with some of his outbursts. Quite often, you would imagine that he has hooked the ball across two fairways and out of bounds by the way he has reacted to a shot which has actually ended up on the green 30 feet away from the hole.

But the game needs these interesting figures who just provide box office entertainment. And it is good to see that he has received the backing of a fellow player, with Puig clearly more than happy to let him carry on with exactly what he is doing now.
