With the PGA Tour-LIV Golf situation yet to be resolved, the major championships are now even more important.

That’s because, unfortunately, there are only four tournaments on the calendar where all the best players in the world compete against each other.

These are particularly important for the LIV golfers as they don’t earn world ranking points in standard events.

That’s partly why one man’s disappointing performance at The Masters last week – and most majors in recent times – was so noteworthy.

Sergio Garcia told he’s underachieved in his career despite Masters victory

Sergio Garcia has an exemption to play in The Masters for as long as he likes after winning the tournament in 2017.

And he thoroughly deserved to wear the Green Jacket – his only major victory – after three previous top 10s at Augusta National.

Many then expected that he would continue to play well for years to come, perhaps even challenging to win the event again. But that’s not what’s transpired at all, as golf expert Gary Williams pointed out recently.

Williams said: “When Sergio Garcia won The Masters, he was a year and a half older than Rory is now. He was 37 in 2017. I thought not that it was going to be some tear, but maybe he would win another one.

“He was the guy starting all the way back in 2002, who was earmarked for several. Never got one, and then he did.

“Listen to his major championship results since he won The Masters. He has 26 major championship starts. 16 missed cuts, at one point seven in a row, and his best result in any since winning The Masters was tied 12th last year at the US Open.

“That to me is extraordinary. That is an extraordinary underachievement level for one of the more talented players of his generation.”

Sergio Garcia’s record at The Masters since winning the Green Jacket

Garcia only missed the cut at The Masters once in his last eight appearances before his victory in 2017, defeating Justin Rose in a playoff.

Strangely, since winning the Green Jacket – the highlight of his career – he’s only made the weekend once in his next seven tries.

In most cases, finally getting over the line in a major alleviates pressure thereafter and allows players to perform even better.

Garcia’s recent record is nothing short of abysmal, and while he’s undoubtedly a European golf legend, it’s fair to say that he’s fulfilled his potential.
